Gambling Lambs #28: The One With Johann Sebastian Joust

Hey! We had a marvellous time at GameCity, thanks for coming. Hopefully get some photos up soon. For now, the next Gambling Lambs is tomorrow, and we have something very special for you.

You see this?

Johann Sebastian Joust in Death Valley! from Die Gute Fabrik on Vimeo.

That Johann Sebastian Joust, that is. It was developed by a lovely man called Doug, from Die Gute Fabrik, along with his friends Nils and Niklas. He’s sent us a copy, and we’ve piled up the PS Move controllers so you can play it, tomorrow, from 21:00 at Lee Rosys. Before that, from 18:00, we’ll have all the usual games too. See you there!

Hello Guardian Readers!

We were very surprised to find ourselves linked from the Guardian website this morning, thanks to Lee Rosy’s proprietor Andrew Beales getting it into a piece on interesting venues around the country. Congrats Andrew! We can heartily second the Guardian’s recommendation, as we’ve been using Lee Rosy’s as our venue for two years now. We’re also fond of Quad in Derby, as well as Drink, Shop and Do in London; both lovely places to sit with a cup of tea.

As someone who travels around the country a fair bit, it’s been nice to see these kind of venues popping up here and there. If you’re in Edinburgh for the Fringe right now, check out Black Medicine Coffee and The Chocolate Tree too. Not quite the cultural places in the Guardian piece, but great little cafes.

If you’re in Nottingham and interested in boardgames, do come and join us at Lee Rosy’s on the first Thursday of each month, from 18:00 to 22:00. The games are commercial games, on a level that’s more interesting than typical family boardgames, but not so complex that you can’t have a cup of tea and a chat over them. Me or Ross will be happy to introduce you to people and/or teach you to play something.

Gambling Lambs Minecraft Server

Quick Shot of the Server Spawn!

You’ll be pleased to know that the Gambling Lambs Minecraft Server is now up and running and ready for people to log on to!

Massive apologies that this has taken so long to set up, I’ve been really, really busy this week and I’ve just not had time to test the permissions and get everything sorted.

There’s a whitelist in place, so you’ll be able to log on, but you won’t be able to build until you contact us first. This can be done by emailing myself (rossaluss[at]gmail[dot]com) mentioning you’d like to be added to the whitelist. You’ll receive an email when this has been done.

Everyone who took part in the GameCity Nights Mega Minecraft Marathon is already on the whitelist, so you need not email me, just go ahead and start playing.

Item genning is turned off for everybody by default. We’d like to keep it that way, however if you really *really* want item genning enabled, let me know via email (as mentioned above) and I’m sure you’ll be able to twist my arm.

Finally, you can connect to the server by typing the following in the IP Address Box on the client;

m.gamblinglambs.com:29265

Unfortunately you still need the port number after the address because we’re not hosted on the default port (using a game server rental place).

I look forwards to seeing you all on there and everything we can build together!

Gambling Lambs #21

Gambling Lambs #21 will be next Thursday. David will be in Edinburgh that week, but fret not, Ross will not be.

This month, there’s a bunch of links for you.

First, for those of you that haven’t heard, there is another Dixit coming in a few months.
It’ll have a box big enough to hold all of the cards from the previous two as well.

Also, not sure if we’ve pointed out Robert Florence before. He did a lot of videogames stuff (Consolevania, Videogaiden), and now also writes about boardgames. His own site is Downtime Town. He also writes Cardboard Children for Rock Paper Shotgun.

If you’re interested in the kind of longer session games that we tend not to have at Gambling Lambs, he does good write ups about them.

On another note, just to pre-warn everybody, May’s Gambling Lambs is again being usurped by the Government and it’s love of holding Public Referendums & Elections on the first Thursday of the month of May.

Due to this, we will be holding May’s Gambling Lambs (NOT April’s) on Wednesday 4th May.

Please don’t turn up on Thursday 5th May as we won’t be there. Instead, please take this opportunity to place your vote on AV.

Finally, as mentioned in the previous post, Gambling Lambs is getting a Minecraft server. It was hoped we would have it up and running by today, however due to Notch releasing the 1.4 update recently, the Mod the server is running is likely to be out of date until Monday. We didn’t have time before it updated to conduct proper testing to ensure the permissions are all working correctly, therefore due to this, it is likely that the server will now not be up and running until Monday/Tuesday. Details (including the address to connect to) will be announced around this time.

GameCity Nights Mega Minecraft Marathon Results

Hello everyone!

Apologies for the time it’s taken me to post this!

For those who made it on the night for the results at the last GameCity Nights, you will know 2 prizes were awarded.

One prize was judged and awarded by David and Ross, the other prize was an audience ‘Clapometer’ prize.

The winners were as follows:

  • The winning team as judged by Gambling Lambs was:

Interface Gaming

For their fortress of epic epicness.

They walked away with a prize lovingly donated by GameCity Nights, and we can’t for the life of us remember what was within said prize! But we’re relatively certain it was marginally better than the 3 pairs of new socks that was offered as a backup prize if we couldn’t source anything by the time of the results!!

We’ve been told by these guys that now the competition is over, we should grant them genning rights and they can show us what they can really do on a server! Might very well just have to do that!

  • The winning team as judged by the audience ‘clapometer’ was:

Team Splendid

Who walked away with a £10 voucher for local comic shop Page 45.

They did an amazing job on their giant castle towers and village grounds. Seriously guys, those towers were awesome!

Thank you so much to everybody who took part and sorry to any teams who didn’t win anything on the night, your hard work on your builds was what made the competition worth holding.

In fact, we had such a great time on this competition, that we’re already cooking up plans for another! (But not another Minecraft one! We’re all Minecrafted out now!)

One last thing – now the competition is over, the server that you were building on is being closed. Don’t worry though, we are migrating the map over to a brand new server managed by Gambling Lambs ourselves! This server is currently being prepared, so for more information on the address to connect to and anything else, please keep your eye on this site for updates (you can also follow us on twitter). We hope to have it all up and running within a day or two.

Thanks again everybody and we hope to see you at Gambling Lambs in future!
